"TV During Family Dinner Time?"

In much controversial move, we did not leave room in our new kitchen for a television.

Yessss!

I hate having the TV on in the morning when the kids are getting ready for school. I think it's a huge distraction. My husband, who gets up a lot earlier than I do, likes to have the FOX 9 Morning News crew keep him company while he eats breakfast. Trouble is, when my boy gets up, he plops right down in front of that set, flips to ESPN and its all over.

When we sit down to family dinner TV is taboo...unless the Vikes are in the playoffs. A rarity. Unfortunately.

As it turns out, statistically, watching TV during dinner doesn't undo the good that sitting down together for the family meal does. A study of 806 Minnesota high school students found that a serving of television with dinner doesn't increase the odds your kids will smoke or use drugs. It seems just having them home over the dinner hour does the trick.

But at our house we enjoy the conversation around the table too much to replace it with the babbling of the small screen.

  1. I completely agree! We don't allow a TV in our kitchen, either, entirely because of the fact that it takes away so much from family time! Sometimes dinner is the only time that all six of us are hanging out together in a day, so we love to make it conversation time! :)

  2. We don't have a tv in our kitchen either. I enjoy hearing about my son's school day (He's 5 and in Kindergarten). My little girl, age 3, tells us a story that we never understand and then cackles for 5 minutes about how funny it was. I enjoy the cackles the most. :-) Dinner time is information time in our house, I find out just what is going on in my son's school the 4 days of the week I'm not there. :-)
