"The Waiting Game"

"Has your daughter made her college decision yet?"

No, she sure hasn't.

"Has she heard from any of the colleges she's applied to?"

No. We're still waiting.

The only parents who ever ask you these questions are the parents of kids who have already been accepted into at least one of the colleges to which they've applied. A lot of students apply early decision, which means they commit to a college early in the process. Or they apply to a school with what's called rolling admission, usually a larger university, that accepts students as they apply.

Not my daughter. Nope. She just applied to schools that don't let you know until...oh, it could be the end of March. And, unlike some of her friends, she didn't apply to a school she didn't really want to go to just to have one sitting in her back pocket right now.

Maybe she should have. "At least then I'd know for sure I was going to college." Imagine a student as good as her talking like that. It's a crazy, competitive world out there. How did this happen?

It's not that I'm worried that my girl won't get into at least one of them. It's just maybe I'll take to wearing a sign on my forehead that says, "How about when my daughter gets into a school, I'll let you know."

  1. My sister applied early admission to her college, and the wait for that alone was torture for her and my parents.

It is almost like the "you haven't had that baby yet" that people get late in pregnancy.
