So what was I thinking letting them have computers?
That they would use them for homework, of course. Which they do. But. Not just that.
I'm not worried that their getting into inappropriate content. We monitor closely. But they do spend a lot of time distracted by Facebook, games and movies. And let's face it, with Hulu, a computer is as good as a TV now.
The times I've threatened to remove the computer from my boy's room because I've felt like it's distracted him from school work or home responsibilities, he's always countered with, "I need it for school."
Now I've got some evidence to the contrary.
After reading this article I'm starting to think letting my kids have computers in their rooms was one of my bigger parenting blunders.
Come start of a new school year there may be some rearranging around here.
When our children are old enough, we will probably have one in their rooms. My husband is one of those ultimate computer geek types, so they will be watched, guided, and protected by program upon program that he writes, I'm sure. Also, I think I will have him hut down the kids internet access at a certain time that will give them time to wash, and prepare for a good night's sleep.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the insightful information. Computers in the bedroom has always been a sticky point with us too. Parenting pre-teens and teens is overwhelming for me, and I always appreciate great advice from those who have been through what I am going through.
ReplyDeleteI've started a blog about my own journey through the teen years at http://www.INeedSupernanny.blogspot.com The title sort of sums up how things are going in my house!
