For that matter, why wait. These are good things to talk to your kids about before they're faced with difficult situations and decisions.
We think we know what are kids are doing when they're on their own. But we don't. Let's hope they make good choices. And stay safe.
One of the speakers at one of my niece's graduation was the president the school board. She had a daughter in the graduating class. Maybe that's why she urged the students to be safe as they moved forward in life. And not just in the conventional sense of making smart choices about wearing seat belts, drinking and using drugs.
She suggested that when their lives fell apart... in large or small ways... as young lives do, that they take a deep breath, try not to panic, know that there are people who love them who will help them get through the crisis. No matter what it is.
I think that's the best advice I've heard given in a graduation speech.
Be safe class of 2010. We are here for you.
My Brother In Law just graduated. He's going to college next year, but not "Going Away". He decided to stay home and continue to have his Mother do all of his cooking, cleaning, and even makes his girlfriend (who is apparently stupid) prepare and bring his food up to his room. It's disgusting. I wish he were going away, to learn how to be self sufficient. Instead, he will continue to be sheltered and trapped in "the nest". Spread your wings class of 2010, you will make mistakes, but you will learn valuable lessons from them!
